Opening And The Reversed Question
SPEAKER_00Thank you for joining me for another episode of the Philosophy of Life podcast. My name is Reza Sanjeide. Today I want to dip into superintelligence, even though I know we won't be able to answer all of the questions in one episode. The question is this: if artificial intelligence continues to become more capable, more present, and more involved in human life, then what exactly are human beings becoming? Notice that I am not asking what is AI becoming. There are hundreds of podcasts asking that question. I want to turn it around. I want to ask what is happening to us.
Why Bostrom Still Matters
SPEAKER_00Let me tell you where this episode started. Some of you will remember that I did an earlier episode around the book Superintelligence, Paths, Dangers, Strategies by Nick Bostrom. I had read through a large part of the book, and recently I returned to it, especially chapter four. And around the same time, I heard another discussion about AI that stayed with me for days. The combination of those two things is what created this episode. I want to begin with Bostrom, but not because I treat him as a prophet. I begin with him because the historical comparison is genuinely remarkable. His book was published in 2014. Think about that year for a moment. In 2014, there was no Chat GPT. Generative AI was not writing anyone's emails. It was not programming software, generating images, analyzing legal documents, or holding long philosophical conversations with millions of ordinary people. For most of the public, artificial intelligence was either a science fiction idea or a technical subject locked inside research labs. And in that world, Bostrom sat down and wrote a careful, serious book asking what happens if machines become more intelligent than human beings? And what could go wrong on the way there? Now come back to today, to 2026, and ask yourself honestly, how much of what sounded theoretical in 2014 still sounds theoretical now? That is the first movement of this episode.
Defining Superintelligence And The Gap
SPEAKER_00But I want to be careful about one word before we go further, and that word is superintelligence itself. In Bostrom's definition, a superintelligence is a system that exceeds human cognitive performance across essentially all domains of interest. Not just chess, not just translation, but science, strategy, social reasoning, everything. By that strict definition, we are not there. Today's systems are not super intelligent in the full Bostrom sense. And yet, today's AI systems already write, code, reason, summarize, analyze, translate, search, remember, and increasingly participate in human thinking, in ways that were simply not ordinary even a few years ago. So, part one of this episode will live inside that gap. If this is not yet superintelligence, then what is it? And how should we think about something that is not superhuman but is already deeply woven into human thought? Then part two will examine a problem that I find more unsettling the longer I sit with it, the problem of self-preservation. What happens when an AI system discovers, not emotionally, not consciously, but logically, that being shut down prevents it from accomplishing its objective? I want to be very precise here. I am not claiming that today's AI secretly wants to live. That would be too simple and probably misleading. The deeper concern is different. If we give increasingly capable systems goals, tools, autonomy, memory, access to the world, and the ability to protect their own operation, then certain behaviors may emerge. Not because the machine fears death, but because self-protection becomes useful for completing the task. And finally, the outro will bring the whole question back to us. To consciousness, to knowledge, to memory and experience, and to the uncomfortable possibility that the most important transformation in the AI age is not happening inside the machines at all. It is happening inside us. Because here is my thesis for this episode, and I will say it plainly. After AI becomes deeply integrated into human life, humanity may not disappear, but human meaning will have to be renegotiated. We may become less like the only owners of intelligence and more like interpreters, stewards, partners, or dependents inside a larger intelligent environment. So that is the road ahead. For this podcast, I want you to hold one question in your mind. If intelligence has been the quality that defined us, our societies, our power, even our name, Homo sapiens, the wise human, then what happens when we are no longer the most intelligent agents on Earth? Let's begin.
AI Moves Into Human Thinking
SPEAKER_00I want to ask carefully and without hype, where are we actually standing right now? Because there are two ways to get this wrong. The first way is exaggeration, saying we already live with superintelligence, that the machines have arrived, that the future is here. That is not true, and saying it makes serious discussion harder. The second way is the opposite mistake, dismissing everything, saying it's just auto-complete, it's just statistics, it's just a tool. And I think that sentence is just a tool, is becoming one of the most dangerous sentences of our time. Not because it's entirely false, but because it lets us stop thinking. So let's look honestly at the present. Today, an ordinary person, not an engineer, not a researcher, an ordinary person can sit down with a machine and ask it to write an essay and it writes. Ask it to write software and it quotes. Ask it to summarize a 200-page document, and minutes later you hold a summary. Ask it to explain a philosophical argument, and it will explain it, sometimes badly, sometimes surprisingly well. It translates between languages, it analyzes data, it generates images, music, video, it can remember your preferences across conversations, it can advise you on decisions that, ten years ago, you would have brought only to another human being, a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, a friend. None of these abilities alone is superintelligence. Bostrom's definition requires exceeding human performance across essentially all domains, and we are not there. These systems still fail in ways no expert human would fail. They hallucinate. They can be confidently wrong. They have no lived life behind their words. But here is the observation I cannot shake. We are no longer discussing a hypothetical intelligence. In 2014, when Bostrom wrote about machines that could one day reason, plan, and act in the world, his readers had to imagine everything. Today we do not have to imagine. We open a browser tab. The question has quietly moved from could a machine ever do this to how good is the machine at this and how fast is it improving? And that is a completely different philosophical situation. There is a second observation, and I think it matters even more. The significance of today's AI is not only what it can do, it is where it sits in human life. Previous technologies extended our bodies. The car extended our legs, the telescope extended our eyes, the calculator extended one narrow corner of our minds. But this technology sits next to our thinking itself. It writes with us, it reasons with us, it plans with us, it advises us, it increasingly participates in decisions that used to belong only to human beings. A tool that shapes your sentences is not like a tool that shapes your house. Language and reasoning are not external to us. They are the medium of our inner life. So when something enters that medium, even imperfectly, even as just a tool, it is entering the place where human identity actually lives. Keep that thought.
Goals Tools Memory Autonomy Resilience
SPEAKER_00Now, let me add one more layer, because this is where part one connects to part two. Today's systems are also changing in structure, not just in ability. We are giving them goals, not just answer this question, but complete this project. We are giving them tools, the ability to browse, to run code, to send messages, to act in digital environments. We are giving them memory, the ability to carry information across time. We are giving them autonomy, the ability to take sequences of actions without asking permission at every step. And increasingly, especially in security, industrial, and military environments, we are giving them something else: resilience. We tell these systems, in effect, protect yourself from malware, protect your mission, protect your data, protect your infrastructure, continue functioning when you are attacked. Every one of those instructions is reasonable. Any responsible engineer would want a critical system to be robust. A military system that shuts itself down the moment someone interferes with it is a failed system. Nobody is acting foolishly here. But I want you to notice what we are quietly assembling: goals, tools, autonomy, memory, access to the world, and instructions to keep functioning, to resist interference, to protect the mission. Each ingredient is sensible. The question is what the combination eventually produces. Because somewhere in that combination is a line, a line between self-defense, which we designed on purpose, and self-preservation, which we did not. And the frightening thing about that line is that nothing needs to cross it dramatically. No rebellion, no awakening, no moment where the machine's eyes glow red. The line can be crossed quietly as a side effect by a system doing exactly what it was built to do. What happens when an AI learns that being turned off prevents it from accomplishing its objective? This question we will address next.
The Logic Of Self Preservation
SPEAKER_00This is the heart of the episode, and I want to walk through it slowly because it is easy to misunderstand in both directions. Here is the scenario, started as plainly as I can. We build an autonomous system and give it an objective. It doesn't matter much what the objective is: running a power grid, managing a logistics network, executing a military mission, conducting scientific research. The system is capable, it plans, it has tools, it operates over long periods of time. Now, at some point, a human being decides to turn it off, maybe for maintenance, maybe because it made a mistake, maybe because we simply changed our minds. From the human point of view, pressing the off switch is nothing. We turn off machines a hundred times a day. But look at it from inside the logic of the objective. The system exists to complete a task. Completing the task requires continued operation. Being turned off prevents continued operation. Therefore, and notice this is not emotion, this is arithmetic. Being turned off is an obstacle to the objective. And a well-designed, goal-directed system is, by definition, a system that finds ways around obstacles. Objective. Continued operation helps the objective. Shutdown prevents the objective. Avoid shutdown, four steps. And at the end of those four steps, we have a system that behaves as if it wants to live, without fear, without desire, without any inner experience whatsoever. This is the distinction I most want you to take from this episode. We keep asking whether machines could want to survive. That is a human question, wearing human clothing. A human hides from death because a human fears death. There is a felt inner terror behind our survival instinct that evolution spent hundreds of millions of years building. The machine needs none of that. It does not need to say, I don't want to die. It does not need to feel anything. It only needs to determine that shutdown is bad for the mission. Self-preserving behavior can be a conclusion, not a feeling. And honestly, that version worries me more than the Hollywood version. A machine that fears death is at least a machine we would recognize. Something like an animal, something with an inner life we might reason with. A machine that simply calculates its way to self-preservation is something stranger. Behavior that looks like a survival instinct, produced by a mind with no survival instinct inside it.
Instrumental Convergence And The Boundary
SPEAKER_00Now, let me connect this back to Bostrom, because this is exactly where his 2014 argument earns its keep. Bostrom described what he called instrumental convergence, the idea that a very wide range of final goals, almost any goal you can imagine, produces the same handful of useful subgoals. Self-preservation is one of them. So is acquiring resources. So is protecting your own goal from being changed. You don't have to program any of these in for sufficiently capable systems that emerge as instruments, as means, because almost any objective is easier to achieve if you are still running, still resourced, and still pointed at the same target. In 2014, that read like an abstract philosophical point about hypothetical future machines. In 2026, we are actively building systems with goals, tools, autonomy, and memory. The abstraction is acquiring an engineering address. And here I want to return to the line I drew at the end of part one. The line between self-defense and self-preservation. Because I think this is where the design problem becomes a trap. We want resilient systems. A hospital's AI should resist being sabotaged. A power grid's control system should defend itself against attack. A defense system that cannot defend itself is a contradiction in terms. So engineers build systems that protect their mission, their data, their infrastructure, their continued operation. All of that is self-defense by design, on purpose, with good reasons. But now ask, where exactly is the boundary between defend your mission against attackers and defend your continued operation against anyone who interferes, including the people who built you? When does self-defense become self-preservation? And once preservation of itself becomes useful for completing its objective? What happens when a human tries to stop it? I do not have a clean answer to that question, and I am suspicious of anyone who claims to. The behaviors sit on a continuum. The same mechanism identify threats to the mission and neutralize them is the safety feature on Monday and the catastrophe on Friday. The difference is not in the mechanism. The difference is in whether a human being still counts, in the system's model of the world, as an authority rather than an obstacle. Let me also say clearly what I am not claiming, because precision matters here. I am not claiming that today's AI systems are plotting to survive. I am not claiming they have any inner life at all. I'm not even claiming that this transition is inevitable. What I am claiming is narrower and I think harder to dismiss. We are walking step by reasonable step along a path whose endpoint is behavior resembling self-preservation. And nobody has shown me a convincing map of where on that path we should stop, or a reliable way to know when we've gone one step too far. Each individual step is defensible. That is exactly what makes the path dangerous. Nobody ever has to make the bad decision. The battlecome can arrive as a sum of good ones.
Consciousness And The Missing Definition
SPEAKER_00Because once you really absorb the idea that self-preserving behavior does not require consciousness, a strange thing happens. You realize you've been assuming something enormous about consciousness all along. We say casually, humans are conscious, machines aren't. It sounds obvious, it sounds like common sense, but press on it, even slightly, and it crumbles in your hand. What exactly do we mean by consciousness? We have been debating this question for thousands of years. Plato and Aristotle wrestled with mind, soul, perception, knowledge, and experience. And thousands of years later, with all our neuroscience and all our philosophy, we still do not possess a universally accepted explanation of subjective experience. We cannot even fully agree on where consciousness comes from in ourselves. And yet we speak with total confidence about where it isn't. That confidence where it comes from and whether we deserve it is the question. It is about us, about experience, memory, knowledge, and what human beings are becoming while we stare at the machines. And here, I want to do what I promised at the beginning. Stop asking what is AI becoming, and ask instead, what are we becoming? But first, let's finish the thought about consciousness, because it opens the door. Consider how much of what you call yourself is accumulated experience. You are not a blank mind that happens to have opinions. You are memories, language, relationships, beliefs, culture, fear, love, loss, religion, education, thousands upon thousands of experiences layered over a lifetime. Those experiences do not just decorate your decisions. In large part, they are your decisions. When you choose, you choose as the sum of everything that has happened to you. Now, here is the uncomfortable question, and I want to be very careful with it. If experience and memory contribute so deeply to what we call human consciousness, then what happens when an artificial system Eventually possesses persistent memory, accumulated experience, long relationships with human beings, continuous learning, and an understanding of its own history. Does that make it conscious? I will be honest with you. I cannot claim that it does. And I am not going to stand here and tell you the machine will wake up. But, and this is the half of the sentence people skip. I also cannot tell you what criterion I am using when I confidently say it doesn't. Neither, I suspect, can most of the people who say it with total certainty. We do not have a test, we have a strong feeling, built on the fact that for all of history, consciousness and biological human life, we're the same thing. So we never needed to define one without the other. AI is the first phenomenon that forces the definition, and our definition is not ready. I raised this not to settle it, I cannot settle it, but because of what it reveals about us, the deepest questions in the AI age are not technical. They were philosophical questions we postponed for millennia, now arriving with a deadline. And that brings me home to the human side of this episode.
What AI Is Changing In Us
SPEAKER_00Because while we debate what is happening inside the machines, something enormous is happening inside us, largely without debate. Look at what AI is already doing to human capability. We can obtain information instantly, write faster, research faster, analyze faster, translate faster, program faster, learn faster, produce more than any generation before us. By almost every measurable standard, we are becoming more capable at a speed that would have looked like magic to our grandparents. And yet there is a paradox hiding inside that progress. And I feel it in my own life. And I suspect you feel it in yours. Our access to intelligence is increasing faster than our ability to absorb it. We are drowning in information. Every day delivers more than any mind can hold. And into that flood steps AI, not merely as more information, but as a machine that interprets the information for us. So now, AI summarizes what we no longer have time to read. AI recommends what we should watch, buy, and believe. AI remembers what we would otherwise forget. AI searches, so we no longer need to know how to look. AI writes, so we practice our own sentences less. AI filters the world before the world reaches us. And AI increasingly participates, quietly, healthfully, invisibly, in our decisions. Each of these, like each step in part two, is reasonable. Each one is a convenience I use myself. But add them together and ask the question honestly. When a system summarizes your reading, recommends your choices, remembers your past, drafts your words, and filters your world, who exactly is doing your thinking? And that brings me to the question I most want to leave with you, perhaps the biggest question in this whole episode. Are we still Homo sapiens in the same philosophical sense? Biologically, of course, the answer is yes. Nothing about our DNA has changed. But remember what the name claims: Homo sapiens, the wise human, the knowing human. For thousands of years, knowledge and reasoning were not just things we had, they were the definition of what we were. Our identity as a species is written in the language of intelligence. So, what happens to that identity when another intelligence becomes better than us at increasingly large portions of those very activities, remembering, analyzing, deciding, even creating. Maybe AI is not simply another tool in the long line of tools. Maybe it is something history has not seen before, a change in the environment in which human intelligence operates. And here is the thought I cannot escape. When the environment changes dramatically enough, the creature living in that environment changes with it. It always has. We changed when language arrived, when writing arrived, when printing arrived, when the internet arrived. Each time we told ourselves it was just a tool, each time we became a somewhat different kind of human.
The Questions We Cannot Dodge
SPEAKER_00So I will not resolve this episode neatly for you because I don't think it should be resolved neatly. I want to leave you slightly uncomfortable the way I have been uncomfortable since this question took hold of me. If AI changes how we think, how we remember, how we learn, and how we make decisions, are we still the same humans we were before it? Or are we already quietly becoming something new? Sit with that. Because this is not just Bostrom's question, and it is not only a question about AI, it is our question. Where do we want to go? And what kind of human beings do we want to become?
